Martin Burgess – MRICS, DMS, NRAC / ACAA Accredited Access Consultant

My Bio

Martin is a Chartered Building Surveyor and Building Control Surveyor, having worked in the construction industry since leaving school in 1978. Initially training as an architect, Martin moved into Statutory Building Control working closely with the Building Regulations and related legislation. When the Disability Discrimination Act was introduced in 1995, Martin had key responsibilities for policy and technical interpretation of legislation as Head of Building Control in a Unitary Local Authority and in the private sector for Blue Chip clients such as Tesco and Costco.

Martins experience has also led to international experience having worked in Australia for their Disability Discrimination legislation. More recently he worked on major transport infrastructure projects in Sydney and Canberra. He has also undertaken project work in Asia Pacific and North America. Whilst the principles of discrimination legislation are similar in many of the countries Martin has worked in, technical requirements can vary significantly, which makes the application of guidance somewhat more challenging.

Martin has qualified as an Access Consultant with the National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC), but is also accredited as an Access Consultant with the Association of Consultants in Access Australia (ACAA.

Martin continues to actively support the principles inclusive design as it provides common sense approach to ensuring the built environment provides access for all users, something that makes buildings more usable and economically viable.
